EYG company founder wins major business award for contribution to the industry

25th July 2023

EYG Commercial’s founder James Bingham has won a major accolade in recognition of his contribution to business in Hull over the past five decades.

James, who founded EYG 52 years ago, was named the winner of the Judges Recognition category of the People in Business Awards 2023.

The award was announced at a ceremony at Hull’s Double Tree Hilton Hotel, with James being left “extremely humbled” at being announced the winner of the prestigious award.

The award submission read: “James established EYG Home Improvements in 1971 from his small terraced house in Hessle, east Yorkshire.

“That business is now a national company, with a total turnover of £650million since its inception.”

EYG Commercial is part of the EYG Group which now employs 300 people and the head office is still in Hull, around two miles from that original house.

It provides employment for many in the community and within the surrounding counties after expanding into Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, with branches in Hull, Lincoln, Spalding, Doncaster, Newark and Scarborough.

The trade and commercial division is a thriving part of the business and operates nationwide on projects valued up to £6m.

EYG Commercial are also specialists in the newbuild sector, being a glazing partner to Beal Homes on five sites across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, as well as supplying and installing windows and doors on smaller housing developments.

“I am very humbled”

On receiving the news of his win, James said: “I feel very humbled by the award, and also delighted.

“When I started EYG, I didn’t ever dream it would become as big as it has, and I am very proud of what everyone has achieved to make EYG the firm it is today.

“This award is testament to the hard work of everyone around me, past and present,” he said.

James is still hands-on in the business, which is now run by Nick Ward, who is the Group Managing Director.

Nick added: “Jim started the business with just £200 and over the years has built strong foundations which have allowed us to prosper and grow. I took over 15 years ago, and without those foundations, we would never have been able to achieve what we have as a company.”

The business manufactures everything in-house across its 65,000 sq ft manufacturing facilities at its Hull head office, with the range and services it offers including windows, doors, shop fronts, conservatories and orangeries, roofs, extensions and garage conversions.

Last year the firm launched its Garden Rooms range to cater for the working from home market, which has been a huge commercial success.
