Operations Director Martin Sutton takes a look back at some recent projects completed by the EYG Commercial team, and our role in helping turn visions to reality.
“This was a project we competed for Bowmer & Kirkland Limited (B&K) in Coventry on a development on Far Gosford Street. It was a £20m project in all, breathing new life into a historic area of Coventry which was the focus of some significant investment into regenerating the area.
“We were on this site for about three months, supplying ALUK 58BW windows, ALUK GT55TB doors and Technal MX curtain walling.
“The development is now home to around 300 students.”
“We are finding demand for special acoustic glazing to reduce noise levels increasingly in demand, especially as many accommodation complexes are now being placed in busy, central city locations.
“It is something we have done on sites near busy roads, and for hotels at Heathrow Airport in London, amongst others.
“On this particular job for Robertson Construction, on the Portobello House development in Sheffield, we manufactured, supplied and installed 184 ALUK commercial aluminium windows, five Technal curtain walling screens and seven single-double doors.
“Over seven storeys, the development includes studios, super studios' and self-contained two-bedroom apartments, housing a large number of the city’s significant student population.”
“Security is one of the biggest factors in any residential development and it was certainly a key feature when we were employed to provide 200 windows, doors and door entry systems for the Bedford Road Apartments and Offices, London, working for Marbank Construction.
“The project, like so many that we undertake, was completed to Secured By Design (SBD) standards, giving our client peace of mind as the doors and windows fitted are recognised as meeting Home Office approved standards for the highest levels of security performance.”
“Property conversions play a big part in our work and the Tate House Student Accommodation development in Leeds was a perfect example, as the superb location on the former Tate Cars headquarters was taken full advantage of for a £9m residential scheme.
“On this project, working for JM Construction, we installed ALUK 58BW windows, ALUK BSC94 sliding doors and, ALUK SL52 curtain walling on a very impressive and high quality development, offering a choice of 74 one, two and three bedroom apartments, specified and designed to offer practical, contemporary living space.
“This was a great project to work on and the final product was superb, with rooftop penthouses boasting stunning views across the city, based in the desirable Northern Quarter, minutes from the city centre.”
“Working around strict planning requirements is part and parcel of the work we carry out day to day at EYG Commercial, especially on jobs which involving historic buildings which are being refurbished to change their use.
“It is common for residential developments to rise from historic buildings which are protected by English Heritage, and on such occasions it is paramount that we work closely with architects to ensure the key characteristics remain, and that any new development remains in keeping with their past.
“That was the case when we were employed by Robertson Construction on the Lawrence Street Student Accommodation in York, a development led by Harrison Developments.
“We installed ALUK 58BW windows and ALUK GT55TB doors as a building which sadly had been empty for many years and had fallen into significant disrepair was given a much needed, sympathetic revamp, providing 115 one, two, three and five-bed en-suite apartments.”
