A Yorkshire Grammar School is to benefit from the efficiency improvements offered by the latest high-performance windows – whilst keeping a traditional look in keeping with its historic buildings.
EYG Commercial was contracted to complete a major window replacement project at Harrogate Grammar School, replacing old steel single-glazed units with the latest range of high-performance aluminium windows.
The project has included the replacement of more than 20 large Georgian-style arched windows, a key aesthetical feature of the school’s prominent, historic 1930s-built main building.
The windows were replaced during the recent week-long half-term school break.
Second stage of three-part project

Martin Shaw, head of installations at EYG Commercial, says he has been pleased with the ‘mix of modern and traditional’.
The arched windows were replaced during the second part of a three-phase installation project at the school, with EYG having first been on site during the summer school holidays.
“This has been a really significant upgrade for the school in terms of the quality of windows installed, as those removed were large, single glazed steel windows which really were showing their age, and would have been contributing to a lot of heat loss,” said Mr Shaw.
“They have been replaced by market-leading window systems in terms of their energy performance, the benefits of which will certainly be felt as we head into the winter months.
“The final look of the arched windows has been really pleasing. It’s a mix of the benefits brought by modern-day window manufacturing with a traditional, historic appearance, and it has worked very well.
“We look forward to returning to site next year for our final installation stage.”
Windows ‘A-rated- for environmental impact

The Seniors PURe aluminium windows have a life expectancy in excess of 40 years and use an innovative, enhanced thermal barrier, manufactured from expanded polyurethane (PUR), allowing ultra-low U-values (rate of heat loss) to be achieved.
The Green Guide, which ranks commercial building materials and specifications based on their environmental impact, gives the windows an ‘A’ rating for use in commercial projects.
EYG has vast experienced of supplying windows and doors to the education sector, and completed seven projects at schools during the 2025 summer holidays.
