Sheffield students can study in peace and quiet thanks to EYG Commercial’s high-performance acoustic glazing in new £6m complex

EYG Commercial’s glazing expertise has helped ensure students heading to the steel city of Sheffield have the very best accommodation by providing windows and doors for a new seven-storey ‘super studios’ complex.

In the heart of the South Yorkshire city, the imposing Portobello House development sits within the University of Sheffield campus and is within easy walking distance from Sheffield Hallam University and the train station.

Built for Empiric Student Property, which has student accommodation complexes in prime university towns and cities across the UK, the project was led by developers Galliard Homes, with contractors Robertson Construction overseeing the build on site.

It was Robertson Construction, who have offices across the UK and a Yorkshire and East Midlands Division in Sheffield, who contacted EYG Commercial to complete the glazing package of works on the £6m complex, to the delight of Steve Swallow, Commercial Director at the Hull-based firm.

“We’ve had a great year at EYG Commercial in 2016 and this was one of many projects we have been very proud to have played a part in,” said Mr Swallow.

“The building was finished to a very high specification, and given its position in the city centre, it required special acoustic glazing to counter the noise locally. It was also a project which came with logistical challenges, being on a busy site.

“We’ve had a number of jobs in 2016 where our expertise in high-performance acoustic glazing was required and we have been approached because of our track record. It is great to know our reputation precedes us for specialist jobs.”

In total, the EYG Commercial team manufactured, supplied and installed 184 ALUK windows, five Technal curtain walling screens, and seven single/double doors for the development, in a contract valued at £228,000.

The scheme comprises a combination of studios, ‘super studios’ and self-contained two-bedroom apartments, with 128 beds over seven storeys, helping serve Sheffield’s 55,000 strong student population.

EYG Commercial, part of the EYG Group based in East Yorkshire and established 46 years ago, works on major developments across the country, offering a range of architectural aluminium and UPVC in high-performance glazing systems from design through to manufacture and installation.

Contracts in 2016 included commercial, retail, student accommodation, health care and education developments, alongside work for housing associations and private developers.
